I've succesfully uploaded two films:
http://www.archive.org/details/WhenIDreamDreams
http://www.archive.org/details/SustainabilityataGlanceCostaRica

However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to upload multiple formats/sizes of the films for download, i can't figure out how to upload thumbnails, and i can't figure out how to upload streaming files of the film, either.

Thank you!!

If you just upload a single size, and let "derivatives" be made from it automatically at the site, I believe those derivates will be different sizes, streaming, thumbnails.

BTW the other posts on this thread are because another patron randomly asked his question as a child of your post. Sorry!

How might one instruct the site to make derivatives? the "item manager" page mentions this, but the language is incomprehensible. I work with web and video for a living and I don't understand how to manage my items in this site at all. It's very frustrating. Thanks for your patience and your help so far...

When you are first creating your item using http://www.archive.org/create/
at one point you'll be filling out "metadata" for the item, on a "metadata editor" page. At the bottom of the page there are options for initially creating derivatives (the default setting) automatically- or not.

For a previously-existing item, you can go to your existing item's details page, and in the lower left you will see an "edit item" link. After clicking there, you can further click "item manager" and then I think you just hit the "derive" button from there, to (re)make derivatives later on. I am not sure how long the derivation process takes (it might be on the order of hours, not minutes or seconds?).

I clicked the "Derive" button...on two different occasions, about a week apart or so. Nothing's happened. What now?

Hi,

http://www.archive.org/details/WhenIDreamDreams
This one is a .mov file, and the only derivation we try to do on those is to create thumbnails from each minute of the movie and then create an animated gif to display above the movie. So you won't get any other file formats for this item.

http://www.archive.org/details/SustainabilityataGlanceCostaRica
There doesn't appear to be a movie file in this item. The only file in the directory (other than xml files) is Sustainability_CR which doesn't have any sort of file format in the file name (like .mov or .mpeg) and thus is not recognized.

Hope that helps!

Alexis

Thanks Alexis. It would be helpful to know which file formats are supported for the derivation process!?

The Sustainability at a Glance page has had something go horribly wrong, apparently. I downloaded it myself, as did many of my friends, weeks ago when I first uploaded it. There was definitely a file there previously, so if there's not one now, I've no idea what happened or how to correct it. It's an mpeg file, just as the link says. Used the same encoder as When I Dream Dreams, so there's a chance it needs to have .mov added to it, but it certainly didn't need that weeks ago.

I see other postings on the archive that have several different mpeg versions of their video, real formats, etc. Please tell me how to do this correctly. Should I just delete my postings and start over?

You end up using an url with "editxml" in the name
to tell us what format (in a dropdown by each file)
each file is in -- that step
is what tells the deriver what files should be derived from
it
(eg: animated GIF, thumbnails, streaming MP4s)

To get there, if you are signed in to IA and looking at your item on our website, on lower lefthand side is "Edit item" link.

For movies, we try to do the following:

If you submit...you get

MPEG2... MPEG1>MPEG4>Animated GIF/Thumbnails
MPEG1... MPEG4>Animated GIF/Thumbnails
MPEG4... Animated GIF/Thumbnails
Quicktime... Animated GIF/Thumbnails
Windows Media...Animated GIF/Thumbnails

I checked out the sustainability movie and added .mov to the file. I'm not sure how that could have happened, but the movie works now. I also deleted the thumbnails because they were all black and I've resubmitted them to the deriver to see if that will fix them.

Thanks! I re-submitted each of them to the deriver as well. Just trying to get a smaller quicktime file right now. We'll see what happens...

Thanks again for your help.

Nothing. I've re-derived each of the files, multiple times, and nothing has happened! What's next?

I'm trying to figure out how to get the MP3's in the stream format to download to my hard-drive so I can then burn so kickin' live CD's. I called up microsoft and they were absolutely no help at all...totally worthless. Does anyone know how to do this with ease? I can get the show to play over Win Media Player 10, but I just can't get them downloaded on the hard-drive! Please help. I just bought a bunch of blank CDs...

Streams aren't downloadable. Instead, save the regular-format files (mp3, or even better flac or shn, if available) to later turn into burnable files. You can decompress any of these to wav to burn audio CDs.

I'm not sure what happened, but the two previous posts are for some reason considered replies to my original post, which has not been addressed at all...
